Overview

Back Taxes, done properly

Almost everyone who comes to us with unfiled returns expects bad news. More often than not, the opposite is true: they were owed refunds the whole time, and the only thing the delay cost them was the benefit payments that stopped while they waited.

Because filing is what unlocks the Canada Child Benefit, the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (formerly the GST/HST credit) and provincial payments, every year you do not file is a year those deposits do not arrive. Getting current usually turns on a stream of money that has been switched off.

Worth knowing
The penalty only applies if you owe
The 5% plus 1% per month penalty is calculated on the balance owing. If you are due a refund, which is the common case for students, newcomers and low-income earners, there is nothing to penalise. The cost of waiting was the refund you never collected.

Who this is for

6 common cases

If one of these sounds like you, this service is a good fit.

  • Anyone with one or more years unfiled - however many
  • Newcomers who did not realise they had to file for their arrival year
  • Students who assumed low income meant no obligation
  • Self-employed people who fell behind during a difficult stretch
  • Families whose CCB or GST/HST payments have stopped
  • People who have received a CRA demand-to-file letter

What's included

What you actually get

Nothing appears on the invoice later that was not described here.

  • Every year prepared separately

Each year uses that year's rules, rates and credits. Shortcutting this is how people end up reassessed.

  • Slip retrieval

We pull the slips the CRA already holds for you, so missing paperwork is rarely a blocker.

  • Penalty and interest quantified

You see the total exposure before we file, not after.

  • Benefit restoration

CCB, groceries and essentials benefit and provincial payments reinstated, including retroactive amounts where available.

  • CRA correspondence handled

We deal with the letters, the demands and the follow-up questions.

  • Relief options assessed

Where the circumstances fit, we advise on the CRA's taxpayer relief and voluntary disclosure routes.

The process

How this works

4 steps, from first message to filed.

  1. Step 01

    Find out where you stand

With CRA authorisation we see exactly which years are outstanding and what the CRA already has on file.

  2. Step 02

    Gather what's missing

One checklist per year. We fill the gaps from CRA records wherever we can.

  3. Step 03

    Prepare year by year

Each return prepared under that year's rules, with refunds and credits claimed in full.

  4. Step 04

    File together and clear it

Filed as a set, penalties minimised, and your benefits switched back on.

Questions

Back Taxes questions

Straight answers to what people ask us most.

I haven't filed in five years. Am I in trouble?
Almost certainly less than you think. If you are owed refunds there is no penalty to pay, because the late-filing penalty is calculated on a balance owing. The real cost has been the benefit payments that stopped. We file all the outstanding years together and get those restored.
What if I've lost my slips?
Once you authorise us with the CRA, we can see the slips the CRA already holds - T4s, T5s and more are usually all there. Missing paperwork is rarely the obstacle people expect it to be.
Will filing late trigger an audit?
Filing voluntarily is what the CRA wants you to do, and coming forward is treated very differently from being caught. Continuing not to file is what raises risk, along with demand-to-file letters and eventually an arbitrary assessment made without your deductions.
How much do you charge for multiple years?
Each year is priced as its own return using our published rate card, so five years of student returns is five times $88 plus HST rather than an open-ended project fee. Amending a previously filed year runs $79-$149 depending on complexity.
