Uber & Lyft Drivers
What you need to know first
Nearly every self-employed person in Canada can wait until they earn $30,000 before registering for GST/HST. Ridesharing is specifically excluded from that rule. If you drive for Uber, Lyft or URide, you were required to register from your first fare - a fact most drivers discover only when there is a problem.
The flip side is genuinely worth having. Registration lets you claim back the HST you paid on fuel, repairs, maintenance and your phone. For a lot of drivers those input tax credits exceed the HST they owe.
“I'll register once I hit $30,000.”
That threshold does not apply to ridesharing. Rideshare drivers register from day one regardless of income. Delivery-only couriers - DoorDash, Instacart, SkipTheDishes - do get the $30,000 threshold. If you do both, the rideshare rule wins.
