Overview

Self-Employed & Gig Work, done properly

When you work for yourself, nobody withholds tax on your behalf. The bill arrives all at once, in April, and it is usually bigger than people expect - because they claimed a fraction of what they were entitled to.

We prepare the T2125 business statement properly: real expense categories, defensible allocations, and the CPP calculation done correctly so you are not paying twice.

Worth knowing
Both halves of CPP land on you
An employee splits CPP with their employer. Self-employed, you pay both shares on net income above $3,500. It is the single biggest shock for first-year freelancers, so we tell you the number early rather than on April 29th.

Who this is for

6 common cases

If one of these sounds like you, this service is a good fit.

  • Freelancers, consultants and independent contractors
  • IT professionals invoicing through a personal business number
  • Realtors, agents and commission earners
  • Uber, Lyft and URide drivers
  • DoorDash, Instacart, SkipTheDishes and other delivery couriers
  • Anyone with side income above $1,000 alongside a regular job

What's included

What you actually get

Nothing appears on the invoice later that was not described here.

  • T2125 statement of business activities

Prepared from your records, with expense categories that match how the CRA expects to see them.

  • Vehicle and mileage

Fuel, insurance, maintenance, lease or depreciation, apportioned to the business-use percentage we help you establish.

  • Home office

Workspace-in-the-home costs calculated on floor area or room count. A $35 add-on covers the full calculation.

  • Equipment and depreciation

Capital cost allowance on laptops, phones and tools, claimed at the rate that serves you best this year and next.

  • CPP on self-employment income

You pay both the employee and employer share. We calculate it precisely and flag it before you are surprised by it.

  • HST coordination

If you are registered, we line your HST return up with your T2125 so the two agree.

The process

How this works

4 steps, from first message to filed.

  1. Step 01

    Tell us what you do

Different trades get different treatment. An IT consultant and a rideshare driver have almost nothing in common on a tax return.

  2. Step 02

    Send income and expenses

Platform summaries, invoices, and whatever expense records you keep. A shoebox of receipts is fine; we have seen worse.

  3. Step 03

    We find what you missed

Most first-time self-employed clients hand us about half of what they could legitimately claim. We ask the questions that surface the rest.

  4. Step 04

    Review and file

You see the business statement, the tax owing and our fee before anything is submitted.

Questions

Self-Employed & Gig Work questions

Straight answers to what people ask us most.

How much do you charge for a self-employed return?
The base return is $88 for students or $109 for T4 employees, plus a surcharge based on your self-employment income: no charge under $1,000, $45 from $1,000-$3,000, $75 from $3,000-$10,000, $105 from $10,000-$20,000, $135 from $20,000-$35,000, $165 from $35,000-$50,000, and $165-$400 above $50,000 depending on complexity. Home office adds $35. Delivery and taxi drivers get 10% off. 13% HST applies.
What expenses can I claim?
Anything reasonable and incurred to earn business income: vehicle costs apportioned to business use, phone and internet, home office, software and subscriptions, advertising, professional fees, supplies and equipment depreciation. The test is business purpose and documentation, not the category name.
Do I need to register for HST?
Rideshare drivers must register from day one regardless of income. Most other self-employed people register once revenue passes $30,000 over four consecutive quarters. We handle registration and filing either way.
I have a T4 job and side income. Which return do I file?
One return covering both. Your T4 income and your self-employment income go on the same T1, with a T2125 attached for the business side. Side income under $1,000 is already included in our base fee.
